WHAT IS SEXISM?

Sexism describes negative attitudes, behaviours, or assumptions about someone based on their sex, often rooted in the belief that women are less capable or should be treated differently. It can take many forms, including what people say or do, the way they behave, or the expectations they place on others. While some examples are obvious, sexism is often subtle and built into everyday situations, and over time it can affect women’s confidence, how they are treated, and the opportunities available to them.

HOW SEXISM SHOWS UP AT WORK

In the workplace, sexism is not always easy to recognise, but it can have a real impact on people’s experiences. It often appears in everyday behaviours that may be dismissed as harmless, such as jokes that put women down, interrupting or overlooking women’s contributions, or making assumptions about the roles women should do. It can also include focusing on appearance rather than ability, questioning whether women can balance careers and caring responsibilities, or using unfair and offensive labels; behaviours that can contribute to women feeling undervalued or excluded at work.

WHY IT MATTERS

Understanding sexism is an important step towards creating a fairer, more respectful workplace for everyone. When sexism goes unchallenged, it can affect confidence, limit opportunities, and undermine wellbeing, whereas workplaces that actively address these issues are more inclusive, supportive, and productive. By recognising different forms of sexism and taking simple steps to challenge them, we can all help create an environment where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and equal value.

WHAT GMB IS DOING

GMB is launching a campaign in your workplace to help highlight and stamp out sexism in all its forms. We want to raise awareness, support colleagues, and encourage everyone to play a part in creating a more respectful and inclusive environment.
